It’s 10.45pm on a Saturday night and you’ve walked into the Games Laboratory. The room is bright, glossy board games line the walls and many wires dangle from the ceiling. A friendly lime-greened, t-shirt wearing crew member welcomes you and you find your seat. Next, the grinning Neil Sinclair stands before you in his pyjamas. The room darkens and you don’t know exactly what to expect, because so far it doesn’t feel like a conventional comedy event.
Sinclair invites a panel of comic friends to come and play a series of games plucked from who knows, but they are good. There are also classics like Guess Who and Jenga although played with magnified twists.
On this particular night Bart Freebairn, Rose Callaghan, Tommy Dassalo are the contestants. If you are particular about whom you are seeing you can check out www.alwayspassgo.com for nightly game and contestant line-ups.
A large feature of the event is the banter between the comics as they play the selected games. All sorts of crazy challenges are presented; just made for laughter. Another source of humour is the point awarding system, similar to panel shows like QI. Points are awarded for the correct answer, partially for attitude or for anything really, depending on how Sinclair feels about the situations that arise. “Hmmm Rosie you can lose two-hundred and fifty points just for that…”
The Late Night Board Game Slumber Party is thoroughly entertaining and by the end of it you don’t feel ready to leave, wanting a little more. If you have any wonderful nerdiness within you, love to play games and go wide eyed over all the hyperactive crazy talk that goes with game playing, than this is the show for you.
